Tender carrots are gently simmered in butter, brown sugar, and seasoning, then finished with a glossy glaze. This simple side dish is warm, slightly sweet, and perfect for weeknight dinners or holiday meals.

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • Saucepan
  • wooden spoon
  • Measuring spoons
  • measuring cup

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Place the carrots, butter, brown sugar, water, salt, and black pepper in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
  • Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the pan.
  • Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the carrots are tender and most of the liquid has reduced.
  • Uncover and continue cooking for 2 to 4 minutes, stirring often, until the remaining liquid forms a shiny glaze that coats the carrots.
  • Remove from the heat, taste, and adjust seasoning if needed. Sprinkle with parsley if desired and serve warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or a squeeze of lemon juice at the end. If you prefer a less sweet glaze, reduce the brown sugar slightly.
